Tour: Goldstein Museum of Design

The Goldstein Museum of Design is conducting a SDA members-only tour of their summer exhibition, "Printed Textiles: Pattern Stories," on Saturday, July 13, at 10 AM. FREE for SDA members.

One of the two exhibition curators, Kathleen Campbell, will walk us through this lively, colorful exhibition, telling us the stories behind the textiles, including things not in the text panels. Themes of the exhibition include "Artists Designing Textiles," Textile Prints as Reflections of the Times," "Appreciation for Handicraft: Legacy of Arts & Crafts," and "The Enduring Appeal of Botanicals." The 50 textiles, all from GMD's collection, are primarily block prints and screen-prints.

Walkabout á la India Flint

Many of us were intrigued by India Flint at the 2011 SDA conference and the way she wanders about picking up natural materials for dyeing. As a result, we have scheduled an India Flint Walkabout for Saturday, June 23, 2012. It will be led by Cyndi Kaye Meier and you are cordially invited to participate. Singing and recitation of poetry as one walks about, while recommended, are optional.

Walk About & Eco Dyeing Print Demonstration

10:30 am - Meet in the Larry Kitto room in the Pavilion.
10:40 am - Begin the walk around Como Park gathering plants and found objects.
(Alternative option - enjoy a cup of coffee at coffee shop.)
11:10 am - Return to the Larry Kitto community room to create bundles
11:30 am - Short demo of alternative methods shown in India Flint’s book: Eco Colour,Botanical Dyes for Beautiful Textiles
Noon – Show and tell of SDA members’ work
1:00 pm - Clean up and adjourn

To create a bundle bring the following:
  • One-half yard of white cotton or one old white shirt.
  • Optional mordant: soak in 1:4 milk/water mixture then hang to dry in sun. (Eco Colour, p.104)
  • 1 silk scarf (available at Textile Center or Dharma Trading) or 1/4 yard of silk
  • (available at Treadle Yard Goods)
  • Cotton string or pearle cotton (3 yards)
Cyndi Kaye Meier took India Flint’s workshop at the SDA Conference last summer. Since then she has been experimenting with plants commonly found in Minnesota. She recently exhibited Serenity, Spring 2012 at Altered Esthetics Formed by Nature exhibit. Visit Cyndi's website for more details about her and her art.

     Come to Susan Hensel Gallery, for wooly, silky, alpaca goodness with demos and shopping opportunities! There will be spinning, weaving, felting, re-using! Fresh food!
     You will find art dolls, handspun and hand dyed yarn, tote bags, tapestry, weaving, spinning materials. It is an ever-changing roster of artists!
     Most artists will be demonstrating!  Some teach, so talk to them. You are invited to sink you hands into the marvelous world of fine fiber.

SDA Members at 2010 Art at Ramsey


Be sure to visit 2010 ART AT RAMSEY: A Juried Holiday Art Fair of quality fine crafts and fine art. Three SDA members – Candy Kuehn, Kit Eastman, Marit Kucera – are participating.
This free event is a sale of quality work by over 60 juried local artists from the upper Midwest who create fine crafts including basketry, clay, fiber, glass, leather, jewelry (gold, silver, pewter, stone, beaded), metal, paper, wood, mixed media, as well as fine arts including painting, watercolor, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
There will be everything from leather handbags and belts, watercolor paintings, silver and gold jewelry, baskets, pressed flower art and hand-forged iron to woven scarves, stone sculpture vessels, dolls, fused glass pendants, woodcut prints, unique hand-dyed silk apparel, hand-carved wooden birds, mosaics, hand-woven rugs, hats, turned wood, original cards, hand-blown glass bowls, plus pottery tiles, vases, bowls, teapots and cups, and also Hmong needle work and holiday ornaments.
Art at Ramsey is sponsored by the Highland/Macalester/Groveland Community Education in cooperation with Artists’ Circle, a non-profit art organization promoting fine crafts. This is the art fair’s fourteenth anniversary show.
